SNAP BENEFITS CRACKLE AND POP AT FARMERS MARKETS

Recipients of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits will get a lot more bang for their buck this summer, as selected farmers markets participate in Just Harvest’s dollar-for-dollar SNAP match this season.

Through the support of the City of Pittsburgh’s Food Justice Fund, 15 area markets give greater access to fresh, regionally grown produce. At each, an onsite Just Harvest tent will allow shoppers to swipe their electronic benefits transfer cards (EBT/ SNAP/ SUN Bucks), debit cards, or credit cards in exchange for tokens. These can be used like cash for fresh produce, meat and dairy products, and baked goods, and are accepted by most vendors.

The Food Bucks program, through Just Harvest in collaboration with the Food Trust, will supplement each $5 spent with an additional $2, and Food Justice Fund SNAP match tokens will pair with Food Bucks coupons at eight markets to provide a full match.

A list of all participating markets, with full match markets listed first and noted, follows. Click on each market’s name to link to their individual website for info, and visit Just Harvest’s Fresh Access page for more details on SNAP.
