Oasis Farm & Fishery, in partnership with Operation Better Block Inc.’s Junior Green Corps, are excited to launch an affordable “Veggie Subscription” that delivers a box of locally-grown, seasonal produce to residents bi-weekly. This program aims to conveniently increase Homewood residents’ access to healthy, fresh foods while supporting local community-based organizations that prioritize grassroots engagement and environmental justice.
What is it?
Pioneered by Dr. Booker T. Whately more than 60 years ago in an effort to promote Black-owned farms, the “veggie subscription,” or Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, has recently rocketed into popularity with more than 13,000 farms across the country connecting with customers directly through produce subscription boxes. In a standard produce subscription, customers pay a farmer upfront for a season’s share of produce to be received on a weekly or biweekly basis.
The Homewood Collective’s Veggie Subscription will feature produce from urban farms based in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood. Each Veggie Subscription box, prepared and delivered on a bi-weekly basis, will include a curated selection of in-season fruits and vegetables grown by The Bible Center’s Oasis Farm & Fishery and Operation Better Block’s Jr. Green Corps Garden. Veggie Subscription customers can expect 8 to 10 produce items in each box weighing in at 4 lbs total and valued at approximately $25.
New this year, all Veggie Subscription customers can learn to grow their food for long term self sufficiency and sustainability! We will host weekly Ask a Farmer workshops, both in-person and online, where you can get expert advice for all of your garden related questions at our! Join in-person with Farmer Fitzhugh aka the Plant Doctor at Oasis Farm & Fishery (7238 Fleury Way Pittsburgh, Pa 15208 ) every Thursday from 5:00- 6:00 PM and/ or online with Farmer Hayly every Friday from 12:00 PM- 1:00 PM via zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89067160210).
