Gardening educator Doug Oster is a fan favorite for the online classes making growing knowledge easily accessible to anyone with internet access. This Thursday, September 5, he ventures into Pittsburgh Botanic Garden to go head-to-head with Education and Exhibits Director Dr. Mark Miller. Topic? Favorite plants to grow!
Whether you’re Team Doug or Team Mark, you’ll have the opportunity to hear each side debate why their selection is the pick of the bunch, defending chosen plants armed not only with passion, but with gardening tips and horticultural facts. No matter which camp you align with, everyone’s a winner, as a guided walk through the facilities gardens and woodlands follows to find some of the plants discussed.
This event runs from 10-11:30 am, but plan to make a day of it and explore the gardens on your own, especially “Big Bugs & Pollinators”! This collection of David Rogers’ large-scale sculptures magnifies the almost-microscopic populace of the insect world utilizing found deadwood and sustainably harvested trees, and is a joy to experience. His works have been touring outdoor spaces for three decades now, and will be moving on from the Botanic Gardens soon with the exhibition closing on September 15th.
This program is open to adult gardeners with any level of experience. Participation cost is $25 for members, or $35 for non-members, with advance registration here. If you’re not a member, take a look at the garden’s upcoming events and programs– you may find it worth your while to join!
